California redistricting could impact U.S. House control
Following the November 2025 approval of Proposition 50, California's redrawn congressional districts could significantly impact the partisan control of the U.S. House during the 2026 midterm elections. The measure aims to redraw districts in a way that could net as many as four additional seats for Democrats in the state.
In District 22, incumbent Republican Representative David Valadao faces a challenge from Democratic candidate Randy Villegas. The race in the Central Valley is expected to be highly competitive. Villegas has campaigned on a platform of progressive income tax structures and relief for working families regarding high gas prices, which have averaged $6.23 per gallon in California. Villegas has also criticized Valadao's support for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, advocating instead for tax policies that target millionaires and billionaires rather than providing them with tax breaks.
