California reports brush fire evacuations and mass seabird deaths

A brush fire known as the Palos fire broke out in the hills near La Habra Heights, destroying at least one structure and threatening others. The blaze, which began in the 2400 block of Las Palomas Drive in Whittier, was estimated at approximately 12 acres as of 4 p.m. on September 14. Authorities issued evacuation warnings for several surrounding neighborhoods, including areas near the Puente Hills Preserve and the Hsi Lai Temple.

Separately, more than 40 dead cormorants washed ashore at Venice Beach over a recent weekend. While the exact cause of death for these specific birds remains unknown, wildlife experts have noted an influx of dead and emaciated seabirds along California coasts since last fall. Potential factors include marine heat waves affecting prey availability, parasites, or infections. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health stated there is no elevated risk to the public.
