California residents document coexistence with visiting black bears

Brian Gordon and Ricardo Martínez, residents of Monrovia near the San Gabriel Mountains in California, have documented a unique coexistence with a family of black bears that frequently use their swimming pool to cool off.

Through their social media account, @poolbearlife, the couple shares footage of the bears playing with floats, swimming, and napping in the water. They have identified several recurring visitors, including a bear named Maddie, a playful bear called Punky, and a sleepy bear nicknamed Nappy.

While the couple has transitioned from initial fear to peaceful observation, experts note that such encounters highlight the increasing tension between urban development and wildlife. To maintain safety, the residents keep a strict distance, stay indoors when the bears are near, and ensure all trash is secured. Specialists warn that bears are highly intelligent omnivores attracted to human food, which can lead to dangerous situations and the eventual necessity of euthanizing animals involved in serious incidents.
