California Sailor Kai Sato Rescued After Month Adrift in Pacific
On June 7, 2026, 39‑year‑old Californian Kai Sato set out from Catalina Island for a solo sail to Hawaii. Two weeks into the voyage the mast snapped, his engine ran out of fuel and his phone died, leaving him drifting in the Pacific.
Sato survived for roughly 30 days by rationing oatmeal, catching fish and squid, and collecting fresh water from condensation using plastic‑bagged buckets. He improvised repairs to the damaged vessel with PVC pipes and kayak paddles, slowly steering back toward a major shipping lane.
On July 22 a Pasha Hawaii container ship spotted his boat near Hawaii and rescued him. He was taken aboard, given food, water and clothing, and later stayed with a relative in Hawaii while planning a future crossing to the Philippines.
