California schools implement new e-bike and e-scooter safety rules
Educational institutions in California are implementing new measures to address safety concerns regarding electric micro-mobility devices on campus.
The Santa Barbara Unified School District has introduced an expanded e-bike policy. To receive a permit, students must watch safety videos and obtain parental signatures confirming an understanding of road rules. The policy requires helmet use, prohibits passengers, and mandates that e-bikes be walked on campus unless a designated route is provided. Under California law, Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are permitted for students, while Class 3 e-bikes are restricted to riders aged 16 or older. Electric motorcycles and modified devices remain prohibited on district property.
At Chico State, students and university police are addressing safety issues related to e-scooters. While scooters offer convenience for campus travel, concerns have been raised regarding pedestrian safety and rule enforcement. Current university regulations require riders to use marked bike paths, adhere to a 5 mph speed limit, and obey stop signs, with pedestrians maintaining the right of way.
