California Senate honors bald eagle Jackie with Wildlife Day resolution

The California State Senate has passed Senate Resolution 140, which proclaims September 4, 2026, as California Wildlife Day. The resolution honors Jackie, a bald eagle from Big Bear Lake who gained international fame through a decade-long livestream.

Managed by Friends of Big Bear Valley, the livestream allowed millions of viewers to observe Jackie and her mate, Shadow, as they nested and raised eaglets in the San Bernardino Mountains. Following an injury and health complications including severe anemia, Jackie was treated at the Ojai Raptor Center but passed away on August 10.

Senator Tony Strickland, who introduced the resolution, noted that Jackie’s story highlights how wildlife conservation can unite people. The resolution also serves to recognize California’s ecological diversity and the necessity of protecting its natural heritage.
