California solar rules drive demand for battery storage
New solar regulations in California, specifically the NEM 3 rules, are significantly altering the financial landscape for residential solar installations. Under these rules, the compensation for excess daytime solar energy sent back to the grid is much lower than the cost of purchasing electricity during the evening.
As a result, homeowners are increasingly being steered by installers toward solar-plus-battery systems to maximize savings. Without battery storage, users may effectively provide energy to utilities like PG&E at low rates during the day, only to purchase electricity back at full retail markups after sunset. This shift has led to debates among consumers regarding whether the higher cost and complexity of battery financing and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are necessary for all households, particularly those with modest electricity usage.
