California State Assembly adopts resolution recognizing Diwali

The California State Assembly has adopted House Resolution 137, officially recognizing November 8, 2026, as Diwali Day. The resolution, introduced by Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, expresses the state’s “deepest respect” for Indian Americans and the broader Indian diaspora.

The measure encourages Californians to participate in the celebrations of the Hindu festival of lights. The resolution notes that Diwali, or Deepavali, is a significant holiday for Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities both in the United States and globally. It describes the festival as a time of unity, generosity, and the triumph of light over darkness.

The Hindu American Foundation welcomed the adoption of the resolution, noting the importance of recognizing the cultural significance of the holiday. The resolution highlights that the festival brings families and communities together through traditions such as illuminating homes with lamps and candles.
