California State University compensation report reveals wage disparities
A new compensation report for the California State University (Cal State) system reveals significant wage disparities among its staff and faculty. While overall unionized compensation is comparable to national averages for similar public universities, approximately one-third of workers receive total salary and benefits that fall below those averages. Conversely, between 13% and 19% of employees earn well above the average.
The report, commissioned by the Cal State chancellor’s office and conducted by the Segal Group for over $1 million, also indicates that employees at Bay Area campuses are generally underpaid when adjusted for regional cost-of-living standards.
These findings arrive amidst intense contract negotiations. Cal State has budgeted for 4% raises this year, but labor unions are demanding roughly double that amount. During a recent trustees meeting, representatives from four labor groups staged a brief protest. Trustee Leslie Gilbert-Lurie expressed concern that low-level base salaries may not sufficiently cover basic needs like food and housing in California.
