California state workers launch historic one-day strike

Tens of thousands of California state employees participated in a one-day strike on Wednesday, marking the first such walkout in the 44-year history of SEIU Local 1000. The union, which represents approximately 100,000 workers including nurses, auditors, and IT professionals, is protesting what it describes as bad-faith bargaining by Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration.

Key points of contention include demands for higher wages, affordable healthcare, and increased flexibility for remote work. The labor action follows a mandate from the Newsom administration requiring state employees to return to the office four days a week by July 1. The union argues that remote work improves work-life balance and reduces state spending on office space.

The strike has caused potential disruptions to various government services, including the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), unemployment benefits through the Employment Development Department, and food assistance programs like CalFresh. Both the union and the California Department of Human Resources are scheduled to resume mediation talks on October 30.
