California state workers to vote on potential strike
SEIU Local 1000, the largest union for California state employees, is preparing for a potential strike following a breakdown in contract negotiations with the Newsom administration. The union, which represents more than 100,000 workers, announced that members will vote from September 9 through October 7 to authorize an unfair practice strike.
The dispute stems from the expiration of the previous contract on June 30. The union has filed an unfair practice charge with the Public Employment Relations Board, alleging that the state has failed to bargain in good faith. Specifically, union officials claim the state rejected several economic proposals—including pay increases, health benefits, and remote work protections—without offering counterproposals.
In response, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) stated that the state intends to continue bargaining in good faith to reach an agreement, though it declined to comment on the union’s internal voting processes.
