California sues anti-abortion groups over pill reversal claims

California is pursuing a lawsuit against two Christian anti-abortion nonprofits, Heartbeat International, Inc. and RealOptions Obria, over the promotion of “abortion pill reversal” services. Attorney General Rob Bonta filed the complaint in 2023, alleging that the groups violate false advertising and unfair competition laws by promoting a treatment that state lawyers claim is unproven, potentially dangerous, and incapable of reversing a medication abortion.

The state is seeking $20 million in penalties. An Alameda County judge recently heard six weeks of arguments to determine if the First Amendment protects the groups' claims or if they constitute illegal false advertising.

In their defense, the nonprofits argue that their work is protected speech and that they have helped thousands of women achieve healthy pregnancies. They also contend that because their services are provided free of charge, they are not subject to false advertising laws. Heartbeat International operates the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, which utilizes high-dose progesterone in an attempt to counteract the effects of abortion medication.
