California, Texas, and Florida lead U.S. remodeling activity

California, Texas, and Florida accounted for more than 20% of U.S. remodeling activity during the first quarter of 2026, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) State Projections of Remodeling (SPR).

California led the nation with an 8% market share, totaling $22.2 billion. Texas followed with 7.3% ($20.2 billion), and Florida accounted for 5.5% ($15.4 billion). Other top states by market share included New York at 4% and North Carolina at 3%.

NAHB chief economist Robert Dietz noted that while recent GDP reports show cyclical weakness in remodeling spending—with the number of states showing negative growth rates on a four-quarter moving average rising to 10—inflation-adjusted spending increased more than 10% between 2023 and 2025. This growth is attributed to an aging housing stock and record-high home equity for existing homeowners. The NAHB Remodeling Market Index has remained above 60 for the past year, indicating steady industry confidence.
