California ultra-processed food certification faces delays

California’s new “Non-Ultraprocessed Certified” program faces significant implementation delays, with the state having until June 1, 2029, to accredit certifiers. The current framework relies on existing product label information, such as ingredients, additives, and nutrient levels, rather than investigating the specific industrial processes used to create the food.

Critics note that the law does not mandate a review of how ingredients or finished products are actually processed. While consumers are increasingly seeking information on food manufacturing methods, the certification details remain undeveloped. There are concerns that a seal intended to identify non-ultraprocessed foods may fail to provide information that is not already available on standard nutrition labels.
