California vehicle thefts drop nearly 25% in 2025, Governor Newsom reports

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that vehicle thefts across California fell by almost 25% in 2025, marking the second consecutive year of decline. The reduction is part of a broader double‑digit drop in property crime, robbery, violent crime and a historic low in homicide rates.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and local law‑enforcement agencies intensified targeted operations and public‑awareness campaigns to dismantle organized theft rings. In 2025, 84% of stolen vehicles were recovered – a total of 111,661 vehicles – with recovery rates of 92.5% for automobiles and 89.3% for trucks and SUVs. More than half of the recovered vehicles were returned to owners in drivable condition.

Newsom said, “Vehicle theft is not a victimless crime; it fuels organized criminal activity and creates hardship for families across California.” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee added that the agency remains committed to holding offenders accountable and keeping communities safe.
