California vineyards begin early grape harvest as warm weather accelerates
An unusually warm spring has prompted wineries in California's Livermore Valley to start grape picking ahead of schedule. Brent Amos, winemaker and partner at Las Positas Vineyards, said workers began harvesting before sunrise, marking the region's first early start this year. He noted that early bud break, mild daytime temperatures and warmer nights have caused vines to awaken sooner, shortening the overall harvest timeline but not affecting grape quality.
The broader California wine country, which runs its harvest season from late summer through October, sees many wineries open their doors wider during this period. Smaller, family‑run estates often allow visitors closer access to crush pads and sorting tables, while larger estates keep guests at a distance for safety and logistics. Travelers are advised to book early, dress for variable weather, and consider weekday visits for a more authentic harvest experience.
