California Voter Foundation proposes reforms to speed up vote tabulation
After a painfully slow vote count in June 2024 that sparked unfounded claims of election irregularities, the California Voter Foundation released a report with ten recommendations to accelerate ballot processing in the state. The proposals include shortening the ballot‑signature‑curing window from 22 to 14 days, expanding electronic signature‑curing access, publishing comprehensive curing data, allowing most close races to be called by the Friday after Election Day, letting counties prioritize counting ballots in extremely close contests, providing additional funding to local election offices, improving public reporting of unofficial results with clearer terminology and real‑time updates, and encouraging voters to return mail ballots early or vote in person.
