California voter fraud investigation targets 28 individuals
The Department of Justice has charged 28 individuals in California with illegally registering to vote and, in some instances, casting ballots. The federal sweep included the arrest of 72-year-old Omar Muñoz in Commerce, California.
Muñoz, who is a registered Republican, has spoken publicly about his 10-hour detention. He alleged that federal agents disregarded his medical conditions, including diabetes and a heart murmur, despite his warnings that he was a fall risk. He described being held in a small room with approximately 10 other individuals while handcuffed and chained.
The arrests have drawn significant political attention. While some officials have used the case to highlight concerns regarding noncitizen voting, Muñoz suggested the operation felt more like a political conflict between the Trump administration and Democrats than a standard law enforcement matter.
