California voters show growing preference for progressive candidates
A new poll conducted by UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies reveals a shift in voter preferences within California, showing a growing inclination toward progressive and democratic socialist candidates over mainstream Democrats.
Among all California voters, the “progressive” label garnered the highest support at 40%. Within the Democratic Party, 60% of registered Democrats expressed an inclination to support progressive candidates, while 58% favored those identified as democratic socialists. In contrast, only 48% of Democrats felt the same about mainstream party members.
The data highlights a significant generational divide. Voters under 40 are more likely to favor the party’s left wing, whereas registered Democrats over 65 overwhelmingly prefer mainstream candidates. Poll director Mark DiCamillo noted that frustration among younger voters regarding mainstream Democrats could present a long-term challenge for the party.
