California voters to decide on billionaire wealth tax measures

California voters will soon decide on two competing ballot measures regarding wealth taxation. Proposition 40 proposes a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of approximately 200 residents worth more than $1 billion. Supporters frame the measure as a necessary contribution to protect healthcare funding.

In opposition, Governor Gavin Newsom has endorsed Proposition 42, a measure funded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Proposition 42 aims to cancel Proposition 40 by prohibiting retroactive taxes and banning new taxes on personal property, including pensions, 401K accounts, business holdings, and art collections. Newsom stated that Californians deserve to have their retirement and life savings protected from new state taxes.

Critics of the wealth tax argue that California’s budget challenges stem from long-term spending issues and unfunded pension promises rather than a lack of billionaire revenue. Analysts note that state and local governments have faced significant pension fund deficits due to optimistic earnings assumptions.
