California voters to elect successor to Eric Swalwell

Voters in California’s 14th Congressional District are set to elect a successor to former Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, who resigned following sexual assault allegations. The special election features two Democratic candidates: State Senator Aisha Wahab and Bay Area Rapid Transit Board President Melissa Hernandez.

Because both finalists are Democrats, the seat is expected to remain under Democratic control, which would increase the House Democratic minority by one member. Wahab previously led Hernandez by more than 20 percentage points in the June special primary.

The race has seen significant spending from outside groups. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), has spent approximately $1.2 million in support of Hernandez and in opposition to Wahab. Combined with other groups like Bold America, outside spending in the race has reached roughly $4.1 million since mid-July.
