California Water Agencies Launch Major Infrastructure Projects
On July 28, 2026, the Valley of the Moon Water District in Sonoma Valley celebrated the opening of the Park and Verano Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Project. The ceremony included officials from the California Department of Water Resources, the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, Sonoma County supervisors, Sonoma Water, and project partners such as EKI Environment & Water and Weeks Drilling. The ASR system injects water into the aquifer for storage and can recover it later during droughts, peak demand periods, or emergencies, enhancing the community’s water‑supply reliability.
Separately, Valley Water’s Board of Directors announced a nearly $2 billion contract to rebuild Anderson Dam in Santa Clara County. The $1.88 billion award to the Flatiron‑Dragados‑Sukut joint venture will fund a seven‑year seismic retrofit beginning in early 2027, with total project costs estimated at about $2.8 billion. The retrofit will reconstruct most of the dam and spillway, install new outlet pipes, and add safety upgrades to protect the structure from major earthquakes. The project is intended to improve water‑supply reliability, support groundwater recharge, reduce flood risk, and restore recreation at Anderson Reservoir. Since 2023, Valley Water has secured more than $114 million in state and federal grants for critical water‑infrastructure projects.
