California Wildfire Claims One Life, Suspect Arrested

A forest fire named Gan (also reported as Gann) ignited at the base of the Sierra Nevada in Calaveras County, California, burned more than 4,000 hectares (over 40 sq km) and destroyed seven structures. Firefighters have contained roughly 40 % of the blaze.

Authorities arrested 65‑year‑old Herbert Wayne Smith, who is accused of starting the fire while operating a motor‑saw and failing to clear flammable material. Smith, previously convicted of arson in 2018, told KCRA he did not intend to start the fire.

The fire caused the death of Susan Solari, a well‑known dog breeder from Angels Camp, who reportedly refused to abandon her dogs. Investigators are still confirming whether the fire directly caused her death.

The incident occurs amid an especially severe fire season in the western United States, with other large fires still active near Spokane, Washington.
