Norte Fire causes mass evacuations and home destruction in Orange County

The Norte Fire, fueled by intense Santa Ana winds, has caused significant destruction and mass evacuations in Southern California. The blaze, which began near San Clemente on Friday morning, rapidly spread into residential areas of San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente in Orange County.

Authorities report that at least six to eight homes have been damaged or destroyed. The fire has burned between 465 and 570 acres, with containment efforts struggling to keep pace with the wind-driven flames. Approximately 16,000 residents were placed under mandatory evacuation orders, and several schools in the Capistrano Unified School District dismissed students early as a precaution.

Emergency responders have faced difficult conditions, with two firefighters being hospitalized due to heat-related injuries. Additionally, Southern California Edison implemented precautionary power shutoffs, contributing to over 175,000 customers losing electricity across the region. While most evacuation orders were lifted by Saturday evening, officials remain on high alert due to continued high temperatures and low humidity.
