California wine industry sees sustainability growth and Napa estate acquisition

The California wine industry is seeing significant shifts in both sustainability practices and estate ownership. According to the 2025 California Wine Community Sustainability Report by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), approximately 70% of the state's wine grape acreage is now certified to a sustainability program, with over 90% of California wine produced in certified sustainable wineries.

In Napa Valley, winemaker Maya Dalla Valle and Coastal Vineyard Care Associates (CVCA) have acquired the 500-acre Cain Vineyard estate on Spring Mountain. The property was largely devastated by the 2020 Glass Fire, which destroyed most vines and all buildings on the site. The new owners intend to rebuild the historic estate despite broader economic pressures in the region, including declining consumer demand and rising costs. A 2026 survey indicated that 50% of Napa vineyards reported declining revenue and 51% reported lower profits in the previous year.
