Calixto Mejía sentenced to three years for illicit enrichment
Former FMLN deputy Calixto Mejía Hernández has been sentenced to three years in prison for illicit enrichment and money laundering. The conviction stems from the “overpayment case” involving funds distributed during the administration of former President Mauricio Funes.
Mejía entered an abbreviated procedure, admitting to the crimes attributed to him by the General Prosecutor's Office (FGR). The Sixth Sentencing Court of San Salvador ordered that his prison sentence be substituted with community service. Additionally, as part of the legal agreement, Mejía must restitute the funds claimed in the process to the State.
Investigations established that Mejía received $208,000 in overpayments between 2009 and 2014 while serving as Vice Minister of Labor.
