Callaway-tuned 1985 Volkswagen Golf GTI up for auction
A rare 1985 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 is currently up for auction on the Bring a Trailer platform. While the second-generation GTI originally featured a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing approximately 110 horsepower, this specific Mars Red three-door model features a period-correct Callaway turbocharger preparation.
Developed by Reeves Callaway during the 1980s, the turbocharger setup runs 10 psi of boost, increasing the output to 150 horsepower. The vehicle also features a BBS body kit and has approximately 35,000 miles on the odometer. Part of the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the car has recently undergone a full repaint in its original color.
This example represents a notable piece of 1980s tuning history, combining the polished refinement of the Mk2 chassis with the performance enhancements characteristic of Callaway’s automotive work during that era.
