Caloric restriction reduces DNA mutation levels in research study
Research led by NYU Langone Health, University Hospitals Cleveland, and the University of Texas has identified a link between caloric restriction and reduced DNA mutation levels. The study, published in the journal Cell, utilized advanced DNA sequencing technology to observe mice fed 30% fewer calories than those with unrestricted access to food.
Unlike previous studies that focused on individual genes, this research demonstrated that caloric restriction impacts mutation patterns across large portions of the genome. Specifically, it reduced substitution mutations, as well as insertion and deletion mutations, across various tissues. These findings suggest that dietary habits may influence aging and disease through genome-wide genetic stability.
