CalPERS retirees receiving $100K+ annual pensions surge

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), the largest public pension fund in the United States, is seeing a significant surge in high-earning retirees. More than 63,000 former government workers now receive annual pension benefits of $100,000 or more, a sharp increase from 26,000 in 2018 and just 1,841 in 2005.

Total payouts from the system rose to $34.6 billion for the most recent fiscal year. Among the top recipients, 36 individuals received over $300,000 annually, up from 21 in 2023. The highest earner was former CalPERS managing investment director Curtis Ishii, who collected $462,784 last year.

This growth comes as the state faces a pension shortfall estimated at at least $153 billion. Local officials have expressed concern that rising pension obligations are straining municipal budgets, with some counties reporting hundreds of millions in additional annual costs. Critics point to legislative decisions made in the late 1990s that substantially increased retirement benefits for state employees as a primary driver of the current financial pressure.
