Calstock residents face ongoing biting insect infestation

Residents of Calstock have been facing an ongoing issue with biting insects, particularly around the village riverside and wetlands. The influx of insects has led to significant local disruption, with some residents reporting severe bites that required antibiotics. A local petition titled ‘Investigate and address Calstock biting insect problem’ has gathered over 600 signatures.

In response, the Calstock Parish Council is collaborating with a medical entomologist from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to conduct a Snapshot Wetland Mosquito Survey. As part of this broader national project to monitor mosquito species in wetlands, the council’s Environment and Climate Emergency Group will deploy three mosquito traps across the village and wetlands throughout July, August, and September. The survey aims to identify the specific mosquito and midge species affecting the community.
