Caltagirone Hospital treats rare hyperinflammatory syndrome in child

Medical professionals at the Caltagirone Hospital in Italy successfully treated a 10-year-old girl suffering from hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and potentially lethal hyperinflammatory syndrome. The condition occurred secondary to concurrent infections involving Mycoplasma pneumoniae, rotavirus, and Clostridium intestinale.

The patient exhibited severe alterations in liver function and coagulation, marked by significantly elevated transaminase and D-dimer levels. The association of HLH with Mycoplasma pneumoniae in a pediatric patient is noted as being particularly rare in scientific literature.

Due to the rapid identification of the syndrome by the pediatric team and the immediate commencement of treatment, the hyperinflammation was controlled. The patient has responded positively to the care, showing a progressive improvement in general condition and a normalization of clinical and laboratory parameters.
