Caltagirone Mayor addresses waste tax increases and illegal dumping costs

In Caltagirone, Mayor Fabio Roccuzzo has addressed recent controversies regarding the Tari waste tax, which has seen a 10% increase for commercial activities. Roccuzzo explained that the tax calculation is not discretionary but is driven by the total costs the municipality must cover to maintain services.

Key factors contributing to these costs include waste disposal, contract expenses, and the cleanup of illegal micro-landfills, which the Mayor estimates cost several hundred thousand euros. Additionally, the municipality is burdened by unpaid credits from users. Roccuzzo emphasized that poor recycling habits and illegal dumping directly increase costs for all citizens. To combat this, the administration is seeking funding to expand its video surveillance system to better monitor and prevent illegal waste disposal.
