Caltech researchers manipulate light beams in 74 femtoseconds

Researchers have achieved a breakthrough in optical technology by successfully manipulating light beams at speeds of 74 femtoseconds. Using an extremely thin silicon surface, the team demonstrated the ability to redirect and reshape a light pulse in a timeframe so brief it is nearly imperceptible to human perception.

Developed at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), this experimental technology allows for much faster response times than current beam-steering hardware, which often relies on slower processes like rotating mirrors or rearranging liquid crystals. The research team includes Professor Harry Atwater, Dr. Lior Michaeli, and Dr. Claudio Hail, with photographic documentation provided by Tel Aviv University.

This advancement holds significant potential for the future of high-speed optical systems, including more responsive cameras, sensors, communication networks, scientific instruments, and emerging forms of photonic computing.
