Calvary Mater Hospital detects mould in intensive care unit

Elevated levels of Aspergillus fumigatus have been detected in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Calvary Mater Hospital as part of quarterly air quality testing. While the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) stated the levels are not considered dangerous to healthy individuals, immediate action has been taken due to the vulnerability of ICU patients.

Remediation efforts include deep clinical cleaning of impacted areas, the deployment of additional portable HEPA filters, and ongoing follow-up cleaning. A building inspection, including the roof space, is being conducted to identify environmental factors. Additionally, the hospital's water tanks have been disconnected following concerns raised by a union.

The ICU will remain operational during the remediation process. The NSW Health Taskforce is currently working to roll out a targeted remediation program at the facility in response to an independent building assessment.
