Calvert County Sheriff Launches DUI Checkpoints to Curb Impaired Driving

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office announced that sobriety checkpoints will be set up on county roads in the coming weeks. The initiative is funded by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office and is part of the state’s “Towards Zero Deaths” campaign aimed at reducing alcohol‑related crashes.

Sheriff Ricky Cox said the checkpoints are intended to educate motorists and enforce Maryland’s impaired‑driving laws. State data show that impaired driving caused more than 6,100 crashes, over 2,700 injuries and 158 deaths in 2024, and research indicates that well‑publicized checkpoints can cut alcohol‑related crashes by about 17% and fatal crashes by roughly 9%.
