Spain: Police staffing shortages, security reinforcements, and airport expansion debates

In Torrelavega, the CSIF union has issued an urgent call for increased Local Police staffing. The union reports that the force is operating at minimum levels despite a 32.1% increase in criminal offenses during the first half of 2026. Specific spikes include a 146.2% rise in serious injuries and riots, a 133.3% increase in drug trafficking, and a 120% rise in vehicle thefts. Currently, only about 45 officers are available for street patrols, significantly below the budgeted capacity.

In Seville, the City Council has implemented a reinforcement plan for the Santa Cruz neighborhood. Following meetings with local hospitality associations, the deployment aims to increase officer visibility and provide faster response times in the city's primary tourist and monumental area. The plan includes the incorporation of new agents into the Tourist Police Unit.

In Ibiza, the President of the Consell de Ibiza, Vicent Marí, announced plans to form a united political front to oppose any expansion of the Ibiza airport. The initiative seeks to coordinate deputies and senators to defend a position against Aena and the central government, aiming to prevent increased passenger capacity and further pressure on the island's tourism model.
