Calvin Bassey identified as leadership figure by Fulham coach Arbeloa

Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has identified Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey as a key leadership figure for the club ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign. Arbeloa, who recently took over the managerial role following the departure of Marco Silva, praised the 26-year-old's work ethic and personality, stating, “He's a really funny guy, but when we have to work, he's the first one. I really love Calvin. He can be our leader.”

Bassey’s leadership potential was highlighted during pre-season, where he wore the captain’s armband in matches against Málaga and Stuttgart. The manager noted that Bassey’s ability to defend in high spaces aligns with his tactical philosophy.

Since joining Fulham from Ajax in 2023, the Nigerian international has become a cornerstone of the defense. He was voted the club’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign and is expected to serve as part of an experienced core alongside players like Bernd Leno and Antonee Robinson to guide a younger squad.
