Calvin Verdonk makes history as first Indonesian in Champions League

Calvin Verdonk made history as the first Indonesian player to appear in the UEFA Champions League during LOSC Lille’s match against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on October 14, 2026. Verdonk entered the game in the 78th minute as a substitute for Romain Perraud.

Despite his historic debut, Lille suffered a 0-3 defeat. Arsenal secured their victory with second-half goals from Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze, and Bukayo Saka. Verdonk played approximately 12 to 15 minutes, recording 16 touches, three tackles, and a pass accuracy of 67 percent.

Verdonk’s achievement is noted as a milestone for Indonesian and Southeast Asian football. While other players with Indonesian citizenship, such as Kevin Diks and Emil Audero, have played in the competition, they did so before obtaining their Indonesian passports.
