Germany sees spate of traffic accidents involving alcohol and speed
In early August 2026 a series of traffic accidents occurred across Germany and neighboring regions, many involving illegal driving behavior. A 16‑year‑old motorcyclist without a licence and insurance collided with a horse on a rural road near Scheyern, Bavaria, injuring the animal. A 35‑year‑old driver who stopped for a cigarette in a construction zone on the A9 near Hilpoltstein then re‑entered traffic without lights, striking a truck and being found under the influence of alcohol and drugs and without a licence. In Pforzheim, a 43‑year‑old man was stopped with a blood‑alcohol level of 2.7 ‰ and faced a drunken‑driving charge. A 91‑year‑old e‑bike rider from Lehrte was killed after being hit by a car on Kreisstraße 122. In England, a six‑year‑old girl died after a collision between a VW Tiguan and a tractor in Warwickshire. Other incidents included a drunken truck driver who knocked over a lamp post and injured police officers near Pegnitz, an intoxicated driver who crashed into a tree in Eberschwang, Austria, and a series of violent confrontations after accidents in Switzerland and Germany. The accidents resulted in several injuries, two fatalities, and numerous criminal investigations for driving without a licence, intoxication, and endangering traffic.
