Cam Heyward addresses retirement plans and criticizes franchise tag

Pittsburgh Steelers veteran defensive lineman Cam Heyward has addressed his future with the team and criticized the NFL franchise tag system. Heyward, entering his 16th season, clarified following recent comments that while he intends to play out his current contract through 2027, he is approaching his career on a year-by-year basis. He noted that the upcoming season could possibly be his last, though he remains focused on playing as long as his body allows.

Additionally, Heyward expressed strong opposition to the franchise tag, describing the mechanism as ‘stupid’ because it ‘hampers players’ and allows teams to take advantage of them for a single year. His comments coincide with ongoing contract negotiations between the Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who is approaching a deadline to secure a new deal before the regular season begins.
