Camaldoli experts release new manifesto for European integration

The volume ‘Un codice per una nuova Europa’ (A Code for a New Europe) has been published by Ave editoria. The work is the result of a collective study and reflection process that began in July 2023 at the Camaldoli monastery.

Prefaced by Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, President of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), and featuring text by President Sergio Mattarella, the document was drafted by over 120 experts and signed by 38 lay associations and movements. The initiative seeks to provide a political and cultural manifesto to complete the European integration project and counter nationalism by placing the person at the center of continental discourse.

The project draws inspiration from the 1943 Camaldoli Code, which was written by Catholic intellectuals during World War II to envision a future of peace and democratic reconstruction. This new iteration aims to foster dialogue between different European regions—including Italian, German, French, Polish, Eastern, and Western perspectives—to address the future of democracy and European unity.
