Camas High School runners protest transgender teammate
Approximately 12 female runners from Camas High School in Washington walked off the course during a cross-country meet on October 13 to protest competing against a transgender teammate. The athlete, an 11th-grade boy, had competed in boys' races earlier in the season before switching to the girls' varsity team.
Some students participated in the protest by painting their limbs with messages such as “Keep women in women’s sports.” Parents of the athletes reported facing difficulties from school district officials and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) when attempting to support their children during the event.
WNBA player Sophie Cunningham publicly commended the students for their actions. The incident has gained national attention, leading to plans for a rally on October 21 to support the runners.
