Cambodia floods force thousands of families to evacuate
Severe widespread flooding in Cambodia has forced more than 2,900 families to evacuate their homes. According to Soth Kim Kolmony, spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), the floods have affected 25,561 families across 10 provinces.
The rising waters have inundated 24,505 houses and damaged or destroyed 12,551 hectares of rice fields. Officials noted that the current flooding is primarily caused by localized heavy rainfall rather than the Mekong River overflowing; water levels at most key Mekong monitoring stations remain below alarm levels and are trending downward.
Despite the receding river levels, weather forecasts predict heavy rain, storms, and strong winds will continue through September 30. Cambodia typically faces seasonal flash floods between July and October.
