Cambodia PM calls for stronger climate resilience and disaster management
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called for enhanced disaster management and increased investment in climate resilience to combat intensifying environmental threats. In a message marking National Disaster Management Day, the Prime Minister warned that climate change, rapid urbanization, and environmental degradation are creating complex risks that threaten sustainable social and economic development.
Hun Manet highlighted several recurring extreme weather conditions in Cambodia, including rising temperatures during the rainy season, irregular rainfall, strong winds, lightning strikes, and riverbank collapses. He also noted the risks posed by infectious diseases and fires. To mitigate these hazards, he directed authorities to prioritize flood and drought management, upgrade local water infrastructure, and monitor vulnerable households.
Additionally, the Prime Minister urged citizens to improve household preparedness by developing safety plans and assembling emergency kits containing essential items such as clean water, dry food, medicine, and radios. He emphasized the need for increased public investment in housing resilience for vulnerable families.
