Cambodia reaches 95‑95‑95 HIV target as weekly pill trial matches daily regimen

In June, Cambodia became the first nation in the Asia‑Pacific region to meet the United Nations’ 95‑95‑95 HIV targets, meaning 95 % of people living with HIV know their status, 95 % of those diagnosed are on treatment, and 95 % of those on treatment are virally suppressed. Dr. Annette Sohn of amfAR’s TREAT Asia program highlighted that “the number one challenge continues to be stigma,” and credited community‑focused outreach for the achievement.

A separate global study involving 607 participants from 11 countries found that a once‑weekly HIV pill combining lenacapavir and islatravir was as effective as the standard daily regimen, achieving a 93 % success rate versus 92 % for daily pills, with comparable side‑effects and no resistance observed. The trial is in its final testing phase before seeking regulatory approval.
