Cambodia to ban online casino gambling to combat fraud

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has announced that all online gambling activities at casinos within the country will be suspended starting in early October. The decision aims to combat technological fraud and prevent illegal financial flows. Hun Manet noted that online gambling has become too difficult to control and expressed a need to tighten management to prevent collusion with fraud networks.

In addition to the gambling ban, the Prime Minister directed authorities to review licensing requirements to reduce the total number of casinos, stating that the current count of over 100 establishments is excessive. While casinos are permitted to promote foreign tourism, gambling remains illegal for Cambodian citizens.

Describing online fraud as a ‘red line,’ Hun Manet emphasized that these activities damage the nation's reputation, tourism, and economy. He stated that while the government welcomes legitimate foreign investment, it will not tolerate ‘factories’ dedicated to fraudulent activities. The Prime Minister warned law enforcement officials to prioritize national interests over personal concerns and committed to taking full responsibility for the consequences of this crackdown.
