Cambodia undergoes urban modernization amid new U.S. travel advisory

Cambodia is experiencing significant shifts in both urban infrastructure and international travel guidance. In Phnom Penh, the government is pursuing large-scale modernization to manage rapid population growth. A preliminary feasibility study for a Phnom Penh Metro Rail Transit system is underway, a project launched by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to alleviate severe traffic congestion and improve connectivity to Techo International Airport and satellite cities.

Simultaneously, the U.S. State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Cambodia, citing concerns regarding crime, civil unrest, and unexploded ordnance. While the advisory covers the country broadly, certain areas near the Cambodian-Thai border have been designated as Level 4, advising against travel due to unrest. Specific provinces, including Siem Reap and Battambang, face heightened risks from unexploded ordnance, and travelers are cautioned regarding strict local drug laws.
