Cambodian cuisine features iconic dishes Fish Amok and Samlor Kako

Cambodian culinary traditions are highlighted through two iconic dishes: Fish Amok and Samlor Kako.

Fish Amok, often referred to as ‘amok trei’, is a signature Khmer preparation consisting of fish, coconut milk, and an aromatic herb paste known as kroeung. The dish is typically steamed, resulting in a thick, creamy, custard-like texture. The Cambodian Ministry of Tourism has promoted this dish internationally, often citing it as a symbol of the nation's gastronomy.

Samlor Kako is another traditional Cambodian dish that utilizes a spicy curry paste base. The preparation involves browning ingredients such as ginger, turmeric, galangal, and lemongrass to develop umami flavors before pounding them into a paste. The dish typically includes a variety of vegetables like eggplant, green papaya, and long beans, combined with meat and fermented fish paste (prahok).
