Brazil: Supreme Court resumes Bolsonaro coup trial amid regional crime reports

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) has resumed hearings in the case involving former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies, who are accused of attempting a coup d'état following the 2022 elections. Defense witnesses, including General Augusto Heleno and former Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga, are scheduled to testify as the judicial process moves toward final arguments.

In separate criminal developments across Brazil, police have conducted several high-profile operations. In Mato Grosso do Sul, authorities released images of two fugitives wanted for the murder of 19-year-old Vitor Orsini. In Belo Horizonte, a man remains in preventive detention after being accused of assaulting his five-month-old daughter. Additionally, a fatal accident on the Fernão Dias highway in São Paulo involved a truck colliding with a pedestrian bridge, resulting in at least two deaths and significant traffic disruptions.

Law enforcement also reported numerous arrests related to drug trafficking and dangerous driving. In Camboriú, a man wanted for drug trafficking was recaptured, while in Capivari, a teenager was apprehended for drug offenses. Various incidents involving motorcycle chases and reckless driving were also recorded in Minas Gerais, Acre, and Alagoas.
