Cambrian Defence & Space to launch cancer research mission into microgravity

Researchers from Adelaide are launching a microgravity mission to investigate how living human cancer stem cells respond to the unique environment of space. Led by Cambrian Defence & Space in partnership with Dr. Nirmal Robinson from the University of Adelaide’s Centre for Cancer Biology, the mission will utilize a European research rocket to study cellular behaviors that are difficult to replicate on Earth.

Microgravity serves as a biological stressor that may reveal vulnerabilities in cancer progression and provide new insights into early detection. The living cells will be housed in a specialized, Swedish-developed reusable payload that maintains a temperature of approximately 37°C. Once the mission is complete, the cells will return to Earth for detailed analysis.

Supported by the South Australian Government’s Space Collaboration and Innovation Fund, the initiative aims to establish a repeatable pathway for Australian biomedical research in space. The reusable payload technology is intended for future applications in pharmaceutical, agricultural, and materials research.
